Training Overview

Both new and returning volunteers can print the Path to Becoming a Certified Tax-Aide Volunteer, which provides a list of basic steps that need be be completed in order to certify for one of our positions and can be used to track your progress as a Client Facilitator or a Counselor.

You District may offer volunteers a variety of training options, to include:

  • New Volunteer Orientation in November or December.

  • In-person Classroom training for new Counselors in December or January

  • Google Meet Office Hours hosted by the instructors to provide assistance or address topics of interest in December and January,

  • In person refresher training for returning volunteers

  • In person training on Advanced Topics

  • Access to Training Resources for self-study, and

  • In-person Certification workshops in January.

Experienced volunteers certifying as Counselors may choose to follow the self-directed Express Training Syllabus, which has it’s own form for tracking your progress.

So check with your District Leadership to find which training options are available to you and choose the method that works best for you and let’s get started!

New Volunteers

  1. Download the Path to Becoming a Certified TaxAide Volunteer.

  2. Complete the tasks for the role you have chosen in Preparing for Certification

  3. Attend a New Volunteer Orientation in November or December

  4. Attend In-Person Training in December or January (separate training for Counselors and Non-Counselors)

  5. Check the Training and Tax Preparation Resources  section and use the materials during training to  learn about specific topics.

Follow the Certification Path for Counselors or the Certification Path for Non-Counselors based on the role you have chosen.

Returning Volunteers

  1. Download the Path to Becoming a Certified TaxAide Volunteer.

  2. Complete the tasks for the role you have chosen, as necessary, in Preparing for Certification

  3. Attend In-Person Refresher Training for Counselors in January on those topics on which you require a refresher

  4. Check the Training and Tax Preparation Resources section and use the materials, as necessary, to refresh your knowledge on specific topics.

  5. Follow the Certification Path for Counselors or the Certification Path for Non-Counselors based on the role you have chosen.
